How sad that not even her first name is mentioned once in this lengthy article. This is certainly one of the ways women were erased from history. I am very keen to ensure the women in my family have their stories told.
That's good to hear Pauline. This is the reason I chose this theme. Even though the stories of the women are mostly very uneventful I want to give them back their names.
Poor Gertrude ... Drowned while doing the household chores. I couldn't help wondering how Mr Williams felt about it all having tried so hard to rescue her.
I'm please you've been enjoying the A to Zs Greg. I would love to know what happened to the children. Both Gertrude's and her husband's families lived nearby so imagine they went to family, but as yet I've found nothing to confirm.
How heartbreaking 💔
I recall reading about Gertrude before, I think - So tragic!
Oh Gertrude! What a tragedy.
It certainly is Jill. Thanks for popping in again.
Even if one could swim, the heavy skirts were a drag pulling the woman down. Very sad, but glad you found this information.
Thanks for your interest Virginia

The poor man. I really felt for him. It must have been dreadful for him to try so hard but yet still not be able to save her.
It has been so interesting to read your A to Z challenge posts. Poor Gertrude! How did the children do after losing their mother?
