August is Family History Month in Australia. I haven’t really made any plans for posting, but I will be attending conferences and webinars during the month.
I was really pleased when I saw that Carmel of Carmel's Corner had created a Geneameme to celebrate Family History Month. Carmel’s idea for the Geneameme is to look at which of our ancestors were alive in 1926.
The question that Carmel asks is: “ Who was alive in 1926, how old were they, what were their circumstances?
Following are my ancestors who were alive in 1926
Paternal Line in 1926
Cornelius Jones 1859-1934 My great grandfather was aged 67 in 1926. He was born in Port Albert, Victoria. In 1926, he was living in Abbotsford, Victoria with his wife, Mary Calnan.
Mary Calnan 1863-1930
My great grandmother, Mary Calnan was born in Violet Town. Her father came to Australia from Kilkenny, Ireland. Her mother Ellen Boyle, came to Australia from Ireland, with the Earl Grey Orphan Girl Scheme. Mary married Cornelius Jones in 1884. Mary died in 1930.
William Lowe Jones 1886-1932
My grandfather, William Lowe died at age 46, when my father was six years old. He married Emily Taylor in Richmond in 1910. The family lived in Richmond, and other nearby suburbs in Victoria.
Emily Taylor 1886-1932
My grandmother Emily Taylor, died in the same year as her husband William, but four months earlier. At the time they died they had ten children, the youngest being three years old. My father was the second youngest child.
Thomas Lloyd Jones 1926-2013. My father was born in January 1926 in Richmond, a suburb of Melbourne. He had quite a tough childhood due to the death of both parents, when he was just six years old. My parents were married in my mother’s hometown Shepparton, and had three girls.
Maternal Line
Thomas Albert Morrison 1904-1978
My grandfather was born in Echuca, Victoria, Australia in 1904. He was one of ten children, 7 boys and three girls. 1926 was the year that he married Leola Waters in Echuca, Victoria.
Leola Joy Waters 1905-1995
My grandmother, was born at Rochester, Victoria in 1905. She moved with her family to Echuca, where she and my grandfather became school friends at a young age. They married in 1926, and had two daughters, the youngest being my mother. I have many memories of my grandparents as they lived close by and I would ride by bike to their house often.
Ada Louise Love 1875-1966
My great grandmother was born in Heathcote, Victoria. Her father died when she was just one year old. She had a younger sister who was born four months after the death of their father. Their mother remarried and they continued to live at Heathcote with their mother and stepfather. Ada lived at Heathcote, until her later years, when she moved to a suburb of Melbourne to be with her children.
Georgina Maria Annette Cox 1857-1943
My 2x great grandmother’s parents came to Australia from Wiltshire, England. Georgina was born in Heathcote, two years after they arrived in Australia. Her first husband died just over one year after their marriage, leaving her with a daughter of just one year old. Another child was born four months after the death of her husband. Georgina remarried in 1880. Her second husband was a farmer from Heathcote. They had ten children. Georgina died in 1943. Seven of her children predeceased her. Georgina’s husband predeceased her in 1922.
Ernest Welfare Waters 1878-1971
My great grandfather was born at Rochester, Victoria. His father Thomas Waters migrated to Australia, arriving in Melbourne in 1852. Ernest married his first wife in Rochester. His wife died after illness, almost two years after they married. They didn’t have children. I knew my great grandfather well, as he lived in our town and we visited him often. I was fortunate to have him in my life until his death, when I was seventeen years old.
Hilda Mary Beatrice Gilmour 1881-1967
My great grandmother was born at Ballarat, Victoria and in 1926 was 45 years old. She was one of four children, two boys and two girls. Hilda married Ernest Waters, one year after the death of his first wife. They had seven children. I have many memories of my great grandmother, as she died when I was an early teenager.
Alexander Gilmour 1857-1929
My 2x great grandfather was born in Mt. Pleasant, near Ballarat. His parents had migrated to Australia from Ireland. Alexander worked as a road labourer. After the death of his wife in 1908, he relocated to Shepparton, to be closer to his daughter.
I found this interesting to look at these ancestors from this perspective, and have noticed many gaps in my research. I did notice that my maternal line had more longevity. After writing this list, my to-do list has now grown.
