Today, I am remembering my great great grandmother, Janet YOUNG, who died at Beechworth, Victoria, 127 years ago, on 29 October 1897.
Janet was born in 1813, at Glasgow, Scotland. On 26 October 1844, Janet married Thomas James Jonathan McQUEEN, at Launceston, Tasmania.
Thomas and Janet had a large family of children. The first two were born in Launceston, before they moved to Victoria and settled in Collingwood, a suburb of Melbourne, where Janet gave birth to a further eight children.
In 1863, Janet’s husband Thomas died aged 41 years.
Janet McQUEEN, now using the name McEWAN, another commonly used variation of her name, married for a second time in 1873. The wedding was held at the family farm of the groom, James TAYLOR, at Broken Creek, Victoria.
There must have been much excitement on the wedding day as two daughters of the groom, Zilla and Elizabeth, were also married that day, making it a triple wedding.
Janet died in the Beechworth Hospital at age 72. Her cause of death was given as old age. She is buried at the Beechworth Cemetary.
