There’s been quite a bit happening in my world of genealogy over the past two weeks. As well as doing the things on my list that I had planned, I’ve been down a few rabbit holes, which have eaten up my time. I’m not complaning, rabbit holes are fun! I must say I am having a love affair with Substack and the genealogy community that is growing there. It brings a joy to my blogging and family history story telling experience that hasn’t been there for quite a while.
Kathy’s Corner
Kathy’s Corner is is a monthly Zoom session on Projectkin. Kathy is a professional archivist and photographer, and these sessions are usually about handling and organising photos. However the October session was all about Halloween. I had planned to attend live, but unfortunately something popped up that I had to attend to at the time, so I missed it. I wasn’t that worried as I knew that I could catch up with the recording. I wasn’t overly interested in the topic as being an older Aussie, Halloween isn’t really something I get involved in. When I was growing up there was very little interest in Halloween in Australia. However, by the time my children came along, it was becoming more popular, but only slightly.
Today, Halloween is everywhere. The kids of course love it, and the parents get involved. The grandparents are still underwhelmed by it, but today are more accepting of it. I grew up in a regional town, and am not really sure if attitudes were different in the large cities.
I came to Kathy’s session with these thoughts in mind. I hadn’t realised how important Halloween was to US culture. I thought it was just a trivial fun thing for children. I didn’t know anything about the history of Halloween and I definitely hadn’t realised that it was so important to families. I learnt a huge amount on watching the recording, and found my fingers twitching as, forgetting I was watching a recording, I kept wanting to put my hand up and make a comment here and there.
Everything about this session was hilarious - the Halloween costumes and many of the memories. I’d recommend watching it.
Podcast News
A few weeks ago, I was interviewed by Andrew at The Family Histories Podcast. I was very surprised when invited, as I’ve never previously done anything like this. The interview was fun to do, and I was pleased to see that the advertising for the new season, where I feature started showing up on social media today. Following is the Tweet that I was surprised to see today. For anyone who is interested, a link to the trailer is below the image.

Newsletters
I don’t always send out newsletters to advise that a new post has been published. I’m very aware of our inboxes being flooded these days, so usually only send a newsletter for one post each week. Following are the posts that were published during this week.
