Time for another in the occasional Sunday Snippets series. This is where I share what’s been happening during the past week, in my world of genealogy. I’ve had a busy week, deep diving into research, writing blog posts and reading some of the amazing family history stories that are published on Substack.
AtoZ Challenge
The AtoZ Challenge is now over. It ended with a reflections post where I have given links to all 26 posts during the month of April. It was a busy but fun month. Click on the image below to read my reflections on the challenge this year.
Projectkin and Mision: Genealogy have created a wonderful supportive community here on Substack. There is always something going on. Each week you can watch a Live Session that will keep you updated with upcoming events for the week. Those events including the Live session can be found on the Events Calendar on the Projectkin Events page
Mission: Genealogy Office Hours
The Mission: Genealogy session this week was about exploring notes, posts and comments.
“All around a terrific discussion that reminds me that these sessions have turned into something that’s more about refining best practices for our community of family historians and genealogists.” - Barbara at Projectkin
This Week on Substack
There was so much great family history writing this week on Substack. I know I have many to catch up on, but following a few stand outs for me. Just click on the image to read the post.
Lori Olsen White
Lori posts about her Mum’s favourite memories and the stories around them. There was recipe included that her Mum loved that I found very ‘interesting’. A lovely post for Mother’s Day
Paul Chiddicks
Paul has written the very sad story of Henry William Chiddicks who lost his life to a tragic accident. These type of stories aren’t at all uncommon. That he ended up in an assylum is heartbreaking.
Heines Sight
Lynda writes a lovely story about Anna Simpson, a very strong and remarkable woman who devoted her life to helping others.
Bill Moore
This is Part 5 of Bill’s series about his Moore Family in America. Meet Gershom Moore.
Stories From The Tree
Kirsti has writes a beautiful story of the house show once called home. Her words brought back so many memories of my own childhood and the houses we lived in.
BJNL’s Genealogy - Jane Chapman
Jane’s story about her 4x great grandfather, Samuel Grey, Veteran of the American Revolutionary War
Paul Chiddicks Note
Each day Paul Chiddicks posts a Fact of the Day to Notes. I’ve become obsessed with these mostly very obscure facts. The post below about the Tower of London is just an example. Check them out.
FACT of the day - Did you know there was a beach by Tower Bridge in London? Officially opened on 23 July 1934, Tower Beach became the Eastenders ‘Seaside on Thames’ - over 1500 barge loads of sand helped to create the artificial beach and rowing boat trips under Tower Bridge could be had for - Paul Chiddicks
My 2x Great Grandfather
I have posted recently about my 2x great grandfather, Thomas Waters. The theme that runs through all the information that I’ve come across about my 2x great grandfather is ‘resilience’. Life wasn’t at all easy for him, but he always seemed to ride above every challenge that was thrown at him.
Letters to Bedfordshire - link to all letters are in this post
Newtonbury Farm, Dunton, Bedfordshire, England
I can't believe I missed most of the posts you included, Jennifer. Thank you for raising them to the top again. And thank you for including me in your list.
Thanks for including me in your list. I’ve found the community here on Substack to be a valuable part of my daily routine.
