Time for another in the occasional Sunday Snippets series. This is where I share what’s been happening during the past week, in my world of genealogy. I’ve had a busy week, deep diving into research, writing blog posts and reading some of the amazing family history stories that are published on Substack.
I love reading the family history writing on Substack. so much of it is about places and people that I’m unfamiliar with, being from the other side of the world. But I love learning new things, and find there are some really great writers here who are well researched. I want to read them all, but I struggle to keep up. The problem is - rabbit holes. Any research that I’m doing seems to take me twice as long. I find I have to be very disciplined and not open Substack, as I’m researching, and that is not easy, but I’m trying.
This Week on Substack
Mission Genealogy: Round Table
The Mission: Genealogy Roundtables are always fun, and there is often something to learn. The best part is getting to chat informally with like minded people who get you, and who don’t look at you like you must be a bit nuts when you mention family history. These sessions are not recorded. The Round Tables are a highlight of my genealogy month.
BJNL’s Genealogy
The first in what I’m sure will be another great series from Jane Chapman. I found this first episode about Richard Lang to be entertaining, educational and very well researched. I always enjoy reading about areas that I know very little about.
Emma Explores
I always learn about something, someone, or a place, in an Emma Explores session. As my family history is very British, there is always something there for me.
Genstack - Robin Stewart
Robin’s Genstack highlights and supports family history writing. You will find blogs, newsletters, podcasts and video to catch up with.
The Chiddicks Observer 12th Edition
I always look forward to Paul Chiddicks Observer, with it’s mentions of writing on Substack. I always find something there, that I missed or someone new to catch up with.
The Past and The Present by Annette Gendler
This beautiful old house stopped me as I was scrolling mindlessly through notes. I couldn’t help but think of the stories it must hold within it’s walls. Annette’s story and her writing made me want to book that ticket for a tour of my British ancestral places, that I’ve been promising myself for many years. Click on the image to read about Annette’s memories.
Culinary History is Family History by Lori Olsen White
I love Lori Olsen White’s writing and though I’m not a lover of potato salad (sorry, Lori) I have really enjoyed reading about her potato salad family memories. It appears that her writing has resonated with many, who have sent in their recipes. The Humble Potato Salad Book is the result of all the interest that Lori created.
Looking Back at This Week on Tracking Down The Family
The English Family of Thomas Waters
I wrote recently about the letters written by my 2x great grandfather, Thomas WATERS, to his family in Bedfordshire, England. It’s time now to look at Thomas’ parents and siblings who were receiving those letters. I have included a link to the letters at the bottom.
Last Will and Testament of Thomas Waters
I have posted previously about my 2x great grandfather Thomas Waters, so I have included links to those posts at the bottom of the page. There is a link to the letters he wrote home to his family in Bedfordshire, England. That link contains a list of links to all letters.
