That's a fascinating albeit gruesome story Jennifer. In you linked blog I see by the comments that the notes about the children. Did you get any further with that?

Nice to meet you at the Hang Out yesterday.

Hello Jenny, it was lovely to meet you yesterday. Unfortunately I’ve done nothing yet about further research. It’s been on my list of ‘things to do in retirement’. I did find an obituary for the older boy, who died age 70. There was no mention of the tragedy or who took over his care. Now that I’m retired I’m planning to visit the archives very soon, and hopefully fill in a few blanks. Thanks for your interest.

Good luck with finding out the story and happy retirement when we get busier than ever.

The murder is awful but explains why Ellen would be buried with her parents.

Patrick's daughter Margaret Hogan inserted a death notice in the Melbourne "Advocate":

BOYLE.—On 11th September, at his residence,

Violet Town, Patrick Boyle, aged 63 years.

R.I.P. Inserted by his sorrowing daughter,

Margaret Hogan.

Family Notices (1891, September 26). Advocate (Melbourne, Vic. : 1868 - 1954), p. 14. Retrieved September 20, 2024, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article169276676

It seems Patrick left a will too.
